visual & textual documentation
In June 2021, I was invited by Loraine Furter to participate as a speaker in a two week-long (online due to covid) typography workshop with the students of the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, along with Lisa Huang (a type designer specialised in Latin and Chinese scripts) and Emilie Aurat (a graphic and type designer specialised in Afaka scripts).
During the workshop we Blended the writing systems in the Latin grid of Unicode, Took a walk through classification boxes with «non-latin typefaces» and tried to Re-invent reading with asemic script design…
With a series of collective exercises of observation, tool experimentation, type and specimen design, the workshop proposed an introduction on typography and its politics. It was an invitation to explore the relationships and influences between design and techniques through societal and design issues.
How to work on unclassifable? How to question standardization in type design?
